About this service

The Lowdown is a Youth Mental Health Charity, providing free and confidential support services for 8-25 year olds in Northamptonshire.  Our services include Counselling, Mental Health & Wellbeing (formerly Wellbeing Café) and Information & Guidance Drop Ins. RE:Start, LGBTQ+ support group, Youth Group, Mindspace, , Young Adult Social, Youth Advisory Board and Sexual Health services. 

Offering a caring environment where young people are always supported on their journey towards positive emotional health and wellbeing. The fully trained team at the Lowdown provides accessible, safe, welcoming, confidential and non-judgemental services for all Young People aged 8-25.

Our Counselling service supports young people to make positive changes in a safe, friendly and non-judgemental environment.  Anyone aged between 8-25 and living within the NN1-NN7 postcode area can self refer or they can be referred by someone else (with the Young Person’s consent) The person-centred counselling sessions are free, confidential and non-judgemental. Sessions can be either face-to-face or remote (by video/phone call.) If you have a young person aged 8-10 years old, referrals to counselling can be done by visiting www.servicesix.co.uk and any Northampton based referrals will be redirected to us here at The Lowdown. 

The Mental Health & Wellbeing Drop In (formely Wellbeing Café) is for young people aged 8-25 years and their parents/carers, Monday and Friday evenings between 4pm and 8pm. All mental health & wellbeing drop-in sessions have professional mental health workers who can offer you a safe space to talk and be listened to. Drop in during opening times or call on 01604 634385 (Mon-Fri 9-5pm) or 07985268134 (after 5.30pm) to book an appointment with a support worker.

We also offer an Information and Guidance Drop-in service, that provides in the moment support with practical issues. We offer a listening ear and validation for anything that 8-25 year olds may be experiencing.  Signposting to any of our services or other services where appropriate and help with the mental health referral process.  We also offer advocacy and guidance to ensure your voice is heard. Open Monday and Friday, 1pm to 8pm and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1pm to 6pm. Sexual Health drop in service also available as part of the above Mental Health and Wellbeing & Information and Guidance Drop ins.  Pregnancy testing, STI testing and guidance on next steps available for young people aged 14-25.

The Lowdown are working collaboratively with Free2Talk to offer weekly Youth groups, every Tuesday and Thursday evening for School Years 7-13, 4pm – 5:30pm and 5:30pm – 7pm in our Lowdown Lounge (Kingswell street - entrance via the car park to the side of the building.) These free groups offer a safe and inclusive space for young people to come and have fun, take part in various activities and just be themselves.  For more information please email [email protected]

Mindspace runs every Wednesday for 11-18 year olds and provides a calm, safe space to explore emotional and personal wellbeing with activities for relaxation, mindfulness, selfcare and creativity. Take a look at our website/ social media for a full timetable of activities for each week.

The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is for young people aged 11-25 years old that are passionate about improving mental health for themselves and their peers. The YAB share their views on all Lowdown services, in order to help improve and make these more accessible.  While doing this they will meet new people, learn and improve skills and add to their own CV or personal statement. Apply via ‘volunteer with us.’

The Young Adult Social is a drop in social session for young people aged 18-25, this is an opportunity to drop in and take part in a range of activities or relax in a café style environment, meet new people and receive support from our Lowdown workers.  Connect with other young people on a similar journey, every Thursday 7-8.30pm at The Lowdown Lounge.

The Lowdown, deliver RE:Start, supporting young people making the transition from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAHMS) to Adult Mental Health Services. Exclusively for 16 – 25 year olds, who need additional support and offering a personal, bespoke, goal driven and holistic approach.  After referral (self-referral or via a professional) support staff work to build trust and understand all/any needs. Offering support for as long as needed and open to all, including those with complex needs, regardless of diagnosis.

The Lowdown’s LGBTQ+ Support Service runs youth groups and events for young people up to the age of 25. Offering a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space for young people to drop in when they want, young people can explore who they are, socialise, meet new friends, talk though difficulties with others who understand, whilst also having fun and joining in with various activities. Out There youth (school years 7,8 & 9), Out There juniors (school year 10-13) and Out There plus (18-25 years old) take place on Friday’s (5-10pm.)
