In Cornwall, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service-Learning Disability Team (CAMHS-LD) celebrate learning disability and take an empowering approach to understanding and supporting children, young people and families. The specialist team provides a service to children and young people with moderate, severe or profound learning disability who have additional mental health concerns and emotional or behavioural dysregulation.
Children and young people with this level of learning disability may develop complex patterns of behaviour which can be distressing. This can include hurting themselves and other people and it can be difficult to keep them safe. The learning disabilities team can provide specific assessment and interventions to support the young person and their parents/carers.
A referral to the team is made to the CAMHS Access Team via the Early Help Hub https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/earlyhelp
If your referral is accepted, you will be contacted by a member of the team who will arrange to meet you. This could be at your home, in clinic or at your child’s school.
This specialist team will work with all the people who are involved with your child or young person, or we can point you in the right direction for different services.
