HOW TO PROVIDE TAILORED SUPPORT
FOR SPECIFIC ROLES AND TIMES
Certain periods within sport can bring increased pressure and uncertainty. Organisations should take a proactive approach to promoting support pathways, ensuring that individuals are regularly reminded of the help available – particularly during times when they may be more vulnerable to experiencing difficulties.
Consider increasing the visibility of support pathways:
- At times of heightened stress, such as in the lead-up to major competitions
- Following a competitive loss or disappointing performance
- During times of transition, including injury, relegation, deselection or retirement
- Ahead of planned breaks, such as summer holidays or the festive period
- Following significant incidents that may affect an individual or team, such as bereavement
During these periods, it is important that people feel reassured that they are not alone. Individuals should know where to find support, and feel safe, supported and confident in seeking help when they need it.
It is also important to recognise that different groups within your organisation may require different forms of support. Athletes, coaches, staff and volunteers can face distinct challenges and may benefit from tailored resources, guidance and interventions that reflect their specific roles and experiences. Support should not be available only when problems arise. Organisations should take a proactive approach, ensuring that people know where to find help and providing additional reminders and tailored support during periods of heightened pressure, change and uncertainty. This helps to create an environment where individuals feel safe, supported and confident to seek assistance when needed.
